i wathced the news a while ago, where this gang member was imprisonded for 26 years, and then thye killed him. and you know, it made me realize i'm against the death penalty. firstly, it's killing. secondly, you could kill the wrong person. and thirdly, it's just pointelss, and yes, prison for life works, but dont' kill the person after 20 years in prison!!

Well if its like 1st or 2nd degree murder then i say sure, if you have sufficient evidence, go ahead. but if they killed someone in self-defense, then they should go free.
really i suppose its up to the victims family. if x was convicted of 1st degree murder against y, then it should be up to y's family to decide on whether to imprison x for life or give them the death penalty.

A very good one. It should be the other families decision if they had the choice

Well, yeah, if the victim was a loner or has no surviving/of age family then it gets tricky.

In most cases i do support the death penalty and i definitely DON'T think that people should be allowed to get out of it by reason of insanity. if they're unhinged, they might do it again. there have to be consequences.

Let the punishment fit the crime right? I can understand what you are saying, Draco Malfoy, but no matter what I won't agree with you. I have a lot of respect for people. Your reasoning does have a degree of sense to it. However, I believe that the death penatly is mearly the government commiting a serious crime in order to punish another person for commiting a serious crime. It's completly logical to say that they are getting their actions thrown right back at them---that it is their just punishment. However, I can not agree to letting the government kill people. No one deserves to be killed. No one. The taking of a human life is wrong- weather you are killing an innocent bystander or a dangerous criminal. Sure, the criminals need to be kept in jail. The saftey and welfare of the people always comes first. That is why I agree with the Iraq war. But by locking dangerous criminals in jail for their entire lives, the people will be perfectly safe. There is no need for killing. None.

yes, i have to agree with ldragontongue.
as for your point that they might do it again, this is why they chould be locked up. insane people too-in asylums, etc....but like someone said, ghandi said "an eye for an eye makes the world blind".
and i think it's legal to commit murder if it's in self defense. like, if someone about to crack you over the head with a hammer, you're allowed to shoot them, butyou have to prove that it was in self defense which is hard.

Oh yeah. You can kill someone if it's self defense. Of course there's nothing wrong with that. But, also, it's unlikly that you'd get the death penalty for randomly killing a stranger who was doing something bad. So, the self-defense thing isn't even an issue.

Here's the big problem with the death penalty, as I see it. In my opinion, as I've stated before, the saftey of the people comes first. But, a criminal can't commit another crime when they are in jail. As long as we keep dangerous criminals in jail--FOREVER, there should be NO NEED to kill them.

If someone is a very dangereous criminal and can not possibly be kept in jail--they're just some sort of brilliant mastermind crimanal who can break out of jail like that *snap* then I believe that is the one, the only, and an extreamly rare situation in which the death penalty can be used.
