I have gotten chainmail emails from people on HWH. I noticed that that in one of the emails, I recognized many of the email recipiants as people from HWH. Should chainmailing HWH members be allowed? What should the limits be for emailing people from HWH?
In my opinion, chainmailing should NOT be allowed (and should be against HWH policy). Now, if someone knows you, or has been emailing you and you give them permission, that is a diffrent situation. But, people SHOULD NOT be able to randomly click an email of an HWH member and send them a chain letter. Emails shold be used only as a way of contacting those who have chosen to let Ana publicly share their email address. Any kind of chainmail, spam, or mass-email (unrelated to HWH) SHOULD NOT be allowed. Questions about the site, emails to teachers/staff, and general emailing ONLY should go into someones inbox. And, for Ana, as the webmistress, the rules should be stricter. If your email is private, then Ana must ONLY send you emails regarding HWH. If your email is public, Ana may send you anything I listed above as sutible for a regular member. Also, I believe that Ana should ask on the get sorted page if you want your email public or private and possibly list what you can recieve if your email is public/private.

[glow=orange,2,300]You have made a point. I never thought about that. I've been doing that, to the friends I have made on HWH. I guess I should have thought about that, and I'm really sorry that I had done that. But, I'm sorta stopping chain mail, because I always get kinds with wishes, and they never some true, and it's wasting my time. But, you are right. You have made some points. But, if a person has permission from somebody on HWH to send them chain mail/e-mails that have nothing to do with HWH, then yeah, I think that should be allowed.[/glow][/size]

Fully agreeed, for example, if I gave you permission to chainmail me you could. But otherwise, you couldn't, EVEN if I had never asked you not to send me chainmail. I think this is a good idea because it will add a more secure feeling to HWH membership. When someone joins a website, they often want to make sure that it is
1. safe 2. that thier privacy is not being violated 3. that the webmistress will not give away their contact information 4. that joining will not give them viruses, spyware, etc.
Not all, but some (actually a higher percent than you might think), chainmaills contain viruses. Also, a limit on how members can use public emails, along with a choice to keep emails private, will help to clarify the answers to the above questions, and may, even, improve membership rates.

[glow=blue,2,300]YES. I fully agree on that! Those 4, things you listed, that's what I want. I'm sure other people want that too. Why else would people put e-mail hidden? Because they want those 4 things. I only give my e-mail to my friends, or people find out my e-mail if I e-mail them. And if I e-mail them, then I obviously can trust them. And you know, I"m glad I decided to stop taking chainmail, because I never even thought they could have viriuses. [/glow]

I agree completely. My email is not listed on the forums, but several of my students send me chain letters, and it's beginning to really irk me. I feel that they're abusing my trust. I put my email on my classes so that they can send me things RELATED TO CLASS. It is incredibly innapropriate to send chain letters, and I will be updating my class to say "please do not send me chain letters."

And some people send emails such as "so-and-so wants you to be in their updated address book" and other things that--if I didn't know where they were comming from-- I would DEFINATLY stick in my spam folder

Ok, everyone. Ana, Arianhrod, and I have all talked about this. We decided on a new chainletter policy. If you send chains, you will get 100 points taken from your house for the first 5 times. 200 points will be taken off for the next 5 emails. By the time you've reached your 10th chain in total, Ana will send you an email warning. If you send a chain again, you will be forced to leave HWH. I think this is reasonable. Now, spam might require a bit more punishment than chians. What do you think?

Much as I dislike spam, I think we should stick with these punishments. They're pretty extreme.

I'm also done with sending chain e-mails. Nothing ever is true. I don't even know why I sent some. I don't believe that anything will happen to you if you do or do not send the chain mail. It's a big waste of time. I'm glad I've stopped, and I'm glad this E-mail Policy thing was made.
